Artist Statement
To make masks is to take part in an ancient and rich human tradition. Masks provide a meaningful way for humans to connect with each other, with nature, and also with the unseen realms of spirit. Combined with story-telling, ceremony and ritual, they have the capacity to fill the spiritual and cultural voids in our modern lives. Because of this, I strive to use this art form as a tool for connection. I hope to spark wonderment and imagination within the viewer, perhaps allowing them to remember something special they have forgotten. I also see my practice as an opportunity to aid in our collective remembrance of shared histories as a means of reimagining what it is to be human.
Utilizing fabric along with a variety of materials, I fabricate wearable masks and costumes that come alive through performance and video art, telling stories and creating a dialogue with the viewer. I also create soft sculpture environments fused with murals and interactive elements to provide a space where my characters can be at home.
In reaction to the spiritual poverty brought about by our current cultural establishment, I have always found myself at odds with traditional lifestyle models that make me uncomfortable, anxious, and depressed. The world is not what I wish it would be, therefore I have used my imagination, dreams, and hopes for a bright vibrant utopian future to aid in its manifestation. It is my sincerest hope that my work can nourish the hearts and souls of the people in this time of great need.
